ENGLISH BELOW
Progettato da Don Paolo Zona, cappellano del Forte, è stato realizzato sulla sella del centro abitato fra il 1853 e il 1857 per sostituire il vecchio campanile, ormai andato in rovina, che si trovava sul lato destro della Chiesa Parrocchiale.
L’impegno economico è stato sostenuto principalmente da alcune famiglie più facoltose del paese: Cassai, Corradi, Pini. Il coronamento della struttura è rimasto incompiuto, in quanto la torre avrebbe dovuto terminare con un’alta guglia.
L’ubicazione, anche se anomala, lontana dalla chiesa, è subito sembrata ottimale per diffondere il suono delle campane verso tutti i borghi dell’abitato.
Nel periodo di costruzione, essendo già stato dismesso il vecchio campanile, nella zona dell’attuale parco dei Roncacci, allora libero da vegetazione, è stata costruita una struttura temporanea con alcune campane: da qui il nome “prato delle campane” riportato in alcuni documenti dell’epoca.
Dalla sua costruzione ad oggi si è già intervenuti sulla struttura (di pietra locale, quindi tendenzialmente geliva) per impermeabilizzarla il più possibile e rallentare il degrado.
THE BELL TOWER
Designed by Don Paolo Zona, chaplain of the fort, it was built in the heart of the inhabited center between 1853 and 1857 to replace the old bell tower, almost in ruins, which was located on the right side of the Parish Church.
Despite being far from the church, its anomalous location immediately seemed ideal for spreading the sound of the bells to all the hamlets of Sestola.
The economic commitment for its construction was mainly supported by some of the wealthiest families of the village: Cassai, Corradi, Pini. However, the crowning of the structure remained unfinished, as the tower should have ended with a high steeple.
During the construction period, with the old bell tower having already been abandoned, a temporary structure with some bells was built in the area of the current Roncacci park, which at that time was free from vegetation: hence its name “meadow of bells” reported in some documents of the time.
Since its construction, some work has already been done on the structure of the bell tower (made of local stone and therefore tends to freeze), in order to make it as waterproof as as possible, thus slowing down its deterioration.
