Antico borgo posto nella parte nord-ovest, così chiamato per la sua esposizione a ridosso dello sperone roccioso, che condiziona l’arrivo del sole a mattina inoltrata, tanto da rendere l’”alba-ghiaccia”. Il borgo è attraversato da una strada di accesso che rappresentava una delle vie di accesso alla Fortezza (oggi strada carrozzabile che porta in Rocca). Centro della borgata è la piazzetta San Carlo, antico nucleo abitativo del borgo che ospitava famiglie di lavoratori agricoli e mulattieri. Poco distante dalla piazzetta si trova anche una graziosa fontana, opera dello scalpellino sestolese Arturo Boldrini (2011). Sempre in questa borgata dagli anni Trenta agli Ottanta del secolo scorso era attivo il macello comunale, mentre oggi l’immobile ospita la biblioteca comunale.
A ridosso dell’Albaghiccia a partire dagli anni Venti del Novecento è stato costruito l’importante vivaio forestale che si sviluppava fino all’odierno campo sportivo (zona chiamata Armania, oggi occupata dal Palazzetto dello sport). Il vivaio permise a moltissimi abitanti del luogo, sia uomini che donne, di ottenere un impiego lavorativo.
ALBAGHICCIA
This ancient hamlet located to the north-west of the village, owes its name to its exposure close to the rocky spur, which conditions the arrival of the sun only in the late morning, thus making the “dawn frozen”. The hamlet is crossed by an access road that represented one of the ways to enter the Fortress (today it is a driveway still leading to the Fortress). The center of the hamlet is represented by the small square of San Carlo, an ancient settlement where families of agricultural workers and muleteers used to live. Not far from the square there is also a pretty fountain, created in 2011 by Arturo Boldrini, a stonecutter from Sestola. The local slaughterhouse was also active in this hamlet from the thirties to the eighties of the last century, while today the building has become the municipal library.
Starting from the 1920s, an important forest nursery was built near Albaghiccia, and it extended up to today’s sports field (this area was called Armania, and is now replaced by the sports hall). The nursery allowed many locals, both men and women, to get a job.
